Black and White Blog Hop and a Giveaway

It's my day for the Black and White Blog Hop!

Thanks Carla (Creatin' in the Sticks) for organizing this hop and keeping us all on schedule. Be sure to check out her blog to see about her awesome giveaway!

In case you've missed a day, here's the entire schedule for the hop. Be sure to check out all the wonderful projects by some very talented people.

So, why did I decide to join this hop? Perhaps this picture will answer that question.

Yes, I have a black and white fabric stash!

When I took a look at my stash and saw all this black and white fabric, I knew right away that I needed to make a scrappy quilt and that I was going to try to work exclusively from stash and not buy anything. I was successful and even had fabric for the backing. (It's a grey instead of black and white, but I like it.)

So what did I make? A lap size (60" x 72"), scrappy quilt that reminds me of barbed wire.

The wind made getting a good picture virtually impossible.

Of course the sub-zero temperatures didn't make it very fun either.

These pictures aren't great, so I'm going to share one when this was just a flimsy on my design wall.

While I am not going to provide a tutorial for the entire quilt, I will tell you that the key to making this quilt work, is to be careful when sewing the half square triangles so you don't lose the points. Here are a couple of close up pictures to show you how I do that.

As you approach a point, know where you need to sew in order to keep it sharp. Make slight adjustments to the seam allowance as needed.. (Don't sew over your pins!)

I pressed my seams open, which makes it very easy to see where the needle needs to hit to be perfect. (You don't have to press seams open. You should be able to see a similar point with a seam pressed to one side.)

Nice crisp point!

When sewing the rows together, it's natural to simply want to fold the top row down on top of the two previously-sewn rows.

If you do that, you can't see the HST point for which you need to aim to get perfect points.

Simply flip the entire set over so the single row is on the bottom and the two previously-sewn rows on are top. Now, you can see the point!

I pin carefully to ensure that there is no movement and that the seams meet exactly.

This was a fun quilt and I figure that I have enough fabric to make another one. I decided to go with a simple black binding for this quilt, but perhaps with the next one I'll incorporate a little color.

Remember when I did this black and white quilt and added a simple punch of color in the flange binding?

I mentioned a giveaway earlier, didn't I?

For your change to win these two charm packs of black and white fabrics (each pack contains 42 - 5" squares), comment below and tell me what color you'd like to see me add for the flange binding on the next black and white quilt I do.

The winner will be randomly selected on Sunday, January 27th. That should give everyone plenty of time to check out all the posts. Be sure that I have a way to contact you. The easiest way to do that is to leave your e-mail address in your comment.

The color to add, I think red. There I is no color that looks better to me with black and white. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

  7. Love your quilt - gotta make one. Whatever color you add, I think it should be neon bright - so acid green or hot pink. Thanks.

  8. I love your quilts! I have lots of black & white prints as well so I really need to do something similar. I am all about lime green so that's the color I would add to the black & white.

  9. Those are two gorgeous quilts! I love just the B&W, but I think any bright color would work as an accent.

  11. I always have loved any shade of purple and the hint of color in the flange is a nice eye catcher. Your quilt looks good and I like the way when you read the name you can see it in the quilt.

  14. Love your black and white quilts. So simple, so elegant. I think I would use a nice bright teal in the flange on your next B&W quilt. Thanks for sharing! Janice.snell@gmail.com

  15. It is a gorgeous quilt, and rather like an elongated bow tie. Nice set of hints too. I would use whatever bright piece you have waiting in the wings - but I am liking the orange range these days.

  16. For a scrappy quilt, this looks beyond beautiful...love it! Thanks for all the tips on making those points match. Adding a touch of color to the flange is a great idea, too.

  17. That looks beautiful and your points are perfect! I'd like to see a pop of royal blue as I always use red or yellow.

  18. I thought at first, your quilt looked so delicate. Then once I read your description of barbed wire, I see it so differently. I love it either way. lol. Thank you for your tips and showing exactly how you get your perfect points. Thank you, also, for joining the B&W blog hop. Great post!

  19. I forgot -I like the teal color in the flange of the quilt you showed. I would go that direction unless it's for Valentine's day, then I would go with red. lol

  23. What a great quilt. Thanks for the tips on perfect points. I think I would do a hot pink flange since you used my first choice, teal, in the previous one. Thanks for the chance to win.

  26. I have a black and white stash but am still decided what it should be. I also have some black and white and pink so that may be my splash of color.

  27. Black and whites can be so dramatic and graphic. Terrific quilt!

  28. Thanks for sharing your wonderful quilts with the Black and White Blog Hop. LOVE the simple POP! of color on the binding of the second quilt!! Not sure I would ever have thought to add that, but it worked SEW well.

  29. Love that quilt. Keeping the points sharp really makes a difference. I have to admit I am not as good about it as I should be. :( I love the second quilt two and I love a nice strong, bright yellow with black and white. A touch of sunshine on a cloudy day . :) Thanks for sharing with us today.

both your quilts are great. Yellow or orange might be great for a flange. Actually all the colors would look great with black and white.

  33. Great tips ... thank you for sharing! Both of your quilts are beautiful. Can't go wrong with anything made in black and white. A chartreuse flange would really add a pop of color to the next black and white quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lovely quilts!! You really do have a knack for black and white. I would love to see a bright blue turquoise or purple splash to the next quilt. However, you keep doing it anyway you like as you seem to be having so much fun!

  35. I love a pop of red with black and white. I know it’s done a lot but it still looks great

  36. Beautiful quilt! I always love a pop of red, but shocking pink is always fun and unexpected!

  37. Joanne, your quilts are beautiful! I really like the flange added in the second one! Thanks for sharing!

  38. Thanks for that great pattern. Beautiful quilts. I love red with those black and white quilts.

  39. What a great pattern idea. I love black and white quilts. For your next one what about a bright purple, teal or orange pop of color? I seem to be hooked on those 3 colours right now 🥴Must be the quilts and bags I’m working on!

  40. Beautiful quilt. I think the color to add is yellow.

  41. I think red would look great against the blacks/whites

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am partial to red with black and white. Love both of the quilts you included especially the barbed wire.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How about acid green or neon orange?? Neither is in my comfort zone but for a flange to pop on a black and white quilt, they would be perfect! I love your "Barbed Wire" pattern and definitely want to make one...NOW!!

  44. Right now I am working on a quilt I call "Black and White Nights" long long story. My quilt will have a little bit of red so I guess that would be a good color for a flange.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Purple! I just did a flange binding for the first time, it was purple outside and lime in.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I would be partial to red with black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It needs a pop so pick what you like. Red, orange, green personally even a rainbow or an ombre would work.

  48. First, I'd love to win the charm squares. I have never used charm squares yet at age 66. I know that hard to believe. I want to make two Village quilts and the pattern calls for charm squares. So, I image I'll use some as well as craps and lots of snippets of yardage. I normally would say that I would automatically say "blue" for a flange. However, I think yellow would really pop with the black and white and make a wonderful pop. Of course, red is also a great pop with black and white. You mentioned that you used gray for a backing. Isn't gray the marriage of black and white? I'd call that a win/win. Thanks for joining the hop and sharing your wonderful projects.

  49. What a great design in your quilt! The tips will be helpful. I’m thinking fushia on the edges.

  50. Forest green would be my choice, I think.
Thanks for the tutorial; your point about watching so that the points aren't cut off is well-taken.

  51. Beautiful quikts. Thanks for the tip on getting the HST points to pop.

Blue is my go to color, however, I'm my brain is on the other side of the color wheel this morning. I am thinking Coral would be lovely with Black and White.

  53. Turquoise is a fantastic spring/summer color if you decide to make another black and white soon!

  54. I didn't see barbed wire until you mentioned it. For some reason I am thinking yellow as the flange. But also rainbow.

  55. Your tutorial is well written and easy to follow. Crisp points are nice. I love yellw with B & W, and thank you for the generous giveaway!

  56. In the blog-hop I saw someone with a background of teal and thought that combination was beautiful. I see you've done many colors, but not that one!

  58. Sos, that's a neat pattern - and thanks for showing us the tutorial of how to put it together so it matches every time! Beautiful. I like a little red with my black and white. Or hot pink. Or lime green, or periwinkle blue.
