So, why did I decide to join this hop? Perhaps this picture will answer that question.
Yes, I have a black and white fabric stash!
When I took a look at my stash and saw all this black and white fabric, I knew right away that I needed to make a scrappy quilt and that I was going to try to work exclusively from stash and not buy anything. I was successful and even had fabric for the backing. (It's a grey instead of black and white, but I like it.)
So what did I make? A lap size (60" x 72"), scrappy quilt that reminds me of barbed wire.
The wind made getting a good picture virtually impossible.
Of course the sub-zero temperatures didn't make it very fun either.
These pictures aren't great, so I'm going to share one when this was just a flimsy on my design wall.
While I am not going to provide a tutorial for the entire quilt, I will tell you that the key to making this quilt work, is to be careful when sewing the half square triangles so you don't lose the points. Here are a couple of close up pictures to show you how I do that.
As you approach a point, know where you need to sew in order to keep it sharp. Make slight adjustments to the seam allowance as needed.. (Don't sew over your pins!)
I pressed my seams open, which makes it very easy to see where the needle needs to hit to be perfect. (You don't have to press seams open. You should be able to see a similar point with a seam pressed to one side.)
Nice crisp point!
When sewing the rows together, it's natural to simply want to fold the top row down on top of the two previously-sewn rows.
If you do that, you can't see the HST point for which you need to aim to get perfect points.
Simply flip the entire set over so the single row is on the bottom and the two previously-sewn rows on are top. Now, you can see the point!
I pin carefully to ensure that there is no movement and that the seams meet exactly.
This was a fun quilt and I figure that I have enough fabric to make another one. I decided to go with a simple black binding for this quilt, but perhaps with the next one I'll incorporate a little color.
Remember when I did this black and white quilt and added a simple punch of color in the flange binding?

I love your quilts! I have lots of black & white prints as well so I really need to do something similar. I am all about lime green so that's the color I would add to the black & white.

I always have loved any shade of purple and the hint of color in the flange is a nice eye catcher. Your quilt looks good and I like the way when you read the name you can see it in the quilt.

It is a gorgeous quilt, and rather like an elongated bow tie. Nice set of hints too. I would use whatever bright piece you have waiting in the wings - but I am liking the orange range these days.
For a scrappy quilt, this looks beyond beautiful...love it! Thanks for all the tips on making those points match. Adding a touch of color to the flange is a great idea, too.

I forgot -I like the teal color in the flange of the quilt you showed. I would go that direction unless it's for Valentine's day, then I would go with red. lol

I am partial to red with black and white. Love both of the quilts you included especially the barbed wire.
How about acid green or neon orange?? Neither is in my comfort zone but for a flange to pop on a black and white quilt, they would be perfect! I love your "Barbed Wire" pattern and definitely want to make one...NOW!!
Right now I am working on a quilt I call "Black and White Nights" long long story. My quilt will have a little bit of red so I guess that would be a good color for a flange.
Purple! I just did a flange binding for the first time, it was purple outside and lime in.
I would be partial to red with black and white.
It needs a pop so pick what you like. Red, orange, green personally even a rainbow or an ombre would work.
First, I'd love to win the charm squares. I have never used charm squares yet at age 66. I know that hard to believe. I want to make two Village quilts and the pattern calls for charm squares. So, I image I'll use some as well as craps and lots of snippets of yardage. I normally would say that I would automatically say "blue" for a flange. However, I think yellow would really pop with the black and white and make a wonderful pop. Of course, red is also a great pop with black and white. You mentioned that you used gray for a backing. Isn't gray the marriage of black and white? I'd call that a win/win. Thanks for joining the hop and sharing your wonderful projects.

I didn't see barbed wire until you mentioned it. For some reason I am thinking yellow as the flange. But also rainbow.
